This shematic illustration shows the difference between the sonographic concepts of axial, lateral and slice (thickness) resolution. In case A (blue) the axial resolution is
smaller than the distance between the two reflectors, and successfully resolves them into separate echoes (two separate images in the ultrasound display). In case B (orange) the lateral resolution, even when larger than the axial resolution, is still smaller than the distance between the reflectors and succeeds in resolving them as separate images. Usually axial resolution is around 4 times smaller than lateral resolution. In case C (green) the slice resolution (equal to the thickness dimension of the transducer) is larger than the distance between the reflectors. Thus, they cannot be resolved and the image produced will be that of one single object. Notice that the distance between these reflectors is larger than in the previous cases and the reflectors themselves are bigger; despite that, the slice resolution fails to individuate them. The slice resolution is always the least accurate of all three.
